First of all, let me say that I have read through the posts that I could find on tranny issues that were answered. I'm not going to act like a mechanic because I'm not although this site has helped me fix a few things myself. Anyway, as you saw my new problem is with the tranny. I read through others but there were numbers and letters and I have no idea what they mean. My 91 Explorer, V6, 4.0, auto will occassionally hesitate when shifting into 3rd gear. Sometimes it wont shift at all and stay in second with the RPMs going up to 4 1/2 and sometime close to redlining. However, sometimes it will shift when it goes that high and sometimes it wont. When it doesnt I just let off and take it slow. Sometime it takes me goosing it a bit to get it to shift. I tried manually shifting it and again the same thing, sometimes it will go into 3rd and sometimes it wont. I called the Ford garage and a few tranny shops and they all say the tranny is shot and a rebuild wouldnt even work. Of course I think they just want money and that isnt the problem but then again it could be. I just thought that I would jump on here for a second opinion because it has proved time and money saving in the past. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I do start back to classes in exactly a week and my baby is the only means of transportation I have. Thanks to all in advance.
