At 100k my tranny started acting up. After reading many posts I inspected and cleaned the governer, etc... and though my fresh fluid seems to be reading the correct level now, Im still more or less stuck in first gear.

Actually if I slightly let of the throttle it will shift up to 2nd, occasionally it will kick back down to 1st again but not always and I can drive normally [but cautiously]? If I do not let off the throttle it continues to rev higher and higher in 1st.

This seems weird, it will shift to 2nd [ie, the transmission is capable of working] but only under these unusual conditions.

best description is having to power shift a manual trans without a clutch.

To recap...
I inspected and cleaned the gvn'r [it showed slight wear but was not stuck as others have reported]
I replaced the vacuum modulator [no fluid in the vac line]
Changed out the fluid and filter [grey sediment in pan, but no particals or metal debris]

At any rate I recently got hit by the economy cutbacks and have no job so Im very hesitant to have it rebuilt or buy a rebuilt and install myself [$$$$] given the unusual behavior Ive described.

Second opinions anyone?
Doug

BTW...Thanks Mike[NH25] for helping me through the intial troubleshooting.

How does it operate

In manual 1, 2 and reverse? Is there any delayed movement in first? These tests check the majority of the clutches If these are solid then the problem is likely in the valve body. Did you check the valve body bolts when you changed the filter?

After a while, all transmission posts begin to look the same. Could you reference the first post so we don't have to keep asking the same questions over again.
