tranny probs

have a 95 explorer that is hard shifting, locking out the overdrive, and making rattle/grind noise from trans area. all problems are intermittant and od is restored on restart. any suggestions?

Welcome to this forum! Do you have a flashing overdrive light or a check engine light? It could be a problem with the torque converter or the front pump. How is your transfer case? A lot of transmission problems are really transfer case issues. Put it up on a lift, and see if you could locate the source of the noise.
