Tranny rebuild under way soon!!

Ok, for any of you interested in this, I've priced a trans rebuild kit for the 94 Explorer I own and will start dissassembly soon, hopefully reassembly will be shortly there after. the kit price was $145.00 I don't know if it comes with bands or not, but at this price I doubt it. with the kit being so cheap, I imagine removal of trans will be most difficult part of job. But it also leaves money over for tranny upgrades that otherwise wouldn't be possible if I had to pay what the shops want. Any way, don't expect alot to happen too quickly, I'll post as often as the job allows, to give insights to pass on to all of you out there.

hello mike, I am very interested with your trans rebuild, as well as any upgrades. My 94 has 149 K, I feel that very soon it will need rebuilding. Also, how did your trans act before giving up.

Hello Slim, my trans has 130,000+ miles on her, and she lost second gear, it started slipping and after a very short time just lost second altogether. There haven't been any warning signs other than the slipping, no burnt fluid only mildly darkened, and no shavings in the pan. Initial cost estimates from the tranny shop put rebuild at approx. $1500.00. that was just for replacing the clutch packs and bands. But other tranny guru's I've talked with said the converter should be replaced as well because it has a lockup type. torque converters could add an additional $600.00 to repairs. So with a shop doing repairs that would run $2100.00 without any upgrades. but doing it myself, we're only talking $745.00 which leaves money for shift kits or performance clutches or whatever they have out there. I haven't researched on performance tranny parts or kits yet, but I'm pretty sure they are out there, I'll let you know what I find when I get that Info.

Thanks for your reply mike. My tranny started using a lot of fluid. After changing the filter the fluid loss stopped, the screen was totally blown out! Then everything was fine for a while, now it slips when it is cold.

Mine went bad when it got cold out too.....wonder if there is a common problem at work here?? By the way Slim What gear is slipping on yours?

Mike, it slips from a dead start, then it when it shifts to the next gear I think it is shifting late. After it
gets up to temperature it seems OK, I know it is not.

Slim,

My tranny's been doing the same thing for over a year now. No real problems other than sloppy shifting when cold. I tried the speed governor fix:

It did fix the problem for over a year, but it's back. I'm switching to synthetic ATF soon to see if it helps any…

CHH777, I hope mine will continue making it down the road that long. I plan to keep using it till it
dies, then I will rebuild it myself with help from all the great people on this site, thanks again.

Hey guys, I'm with you!! I'm driving it now, but it won't be long till she runs out of working gears!!! My problem is with second right now, but I'm sure third will get real tired of pulling the load by itself. What I'm curious about is these synthetic ATF fluids..... what brand do you recomend, right now I use synthetic valvoline in the engine, and that has been a great switch for me, but I hadn't heard of the synthetic ATF's yet. who is making them?

There are several ATF's on the market. Be sure to read the labels closely because some of these may be blends. Most blends are only about 5% synthetic and you don't get any of the benefits of a 100% synthetic.

If you want the best synthetic ATF, try AMSOIL. Lasts 3 times longer than conventional ATF, reduces operating temps 20 to 50 degrees F and your tranny will shift a whole lot better.

Hey, I found this rebuild kits on e-bay for 58.00. Also, they have up-grades.

Thanks Slim, those are definitly helpful, put a bid in already for one of the kits. I've never used e-bay before, I hope it works!

Hello mike, how have you been. Curious about your trany, did you ever rebuild it. I now have 160 K on mine. It slips more every day.

When my trans first blew (at 102k) the people I talked to said all early Explorers blow at around 100k. I apears that the tranny design causes some friction between the trans body and some internal linkage. This is supposed to be in regard to expansion and contraction rates of different metals (aluminum housing vs. steel mechanism).
By the way, here in Seattle, I couldn't buy a used trans if my life depended on it. Not even from the wrecking yards. It had to be rebuilt first. The dealer wouldn't even sell me the rebuild kit.
Good luck
