2002 XLT
My 2002 xlt has been giving me intermittent problems with what seems like the transmission is slipping. Its in the shop now. Is there any problems with the XLT transmission that are a known fault. I don't like the idea that I cant check my fluid level with a dip stick. My vehicle other than this has been great. One more question. Should I get the extended coverage that Ford offers? Its $1800 for 75,000 miles or three more years. It would insure the tranny if its a problem area. This forum is great as we can talk about problems that we all may have. Thanks for your help. Transmission

Viking: I agree, I hate that you can not check the transmission fluid. They tell me (dealer) the dip stick was removed because too many people misread and overfill. The way is is now, unless you have a leak, it is ok as is. Change the fluid on the recommended mileage. that's what they tell me.

On the extended warranty. I purchased the Ford ESP, on my 2003, and it cost $1375. The dealer may have some maneuvering room on the price. The thing I like the most is that it provides me a rental car, if the covered repairs take overnight. I've used mine four time already and found the rental car to be a stress reliever.

Thanks Dsailer for the reply. Hope the tranny slippage is only an adjustment not something bad waiting to happen. I will get the ESP as i plan on keeping my explorer for a few more years. If anyone knows of any ingrained problems with the tranny pls. let me know. Recalls etc. Ken
