Welcome to this forum! To start with, what transmission is in your Thunderbird? If it is an A4LD, then it is possible if you have a 4X2 Explorer. The 4.0 4x4 has different splines on the rear output shaft, and a different extension housing. If your Thunderbird is a turbo, then you would have to put in a non turbo modulator. The bracket for the linkage might have to be transferred as well. Some were made for a column shift, and others were made for a floor shift.

It can be done, but in order to replace the 2WD output shaft with the 4WD output shaft you have to completely disassemble the transmission. The shafts are completely different, and the extension housing is different.

according to my records the t-bird has an aod in it not an a4ld? that is yrs 80-92 tbirds?

3.8 and 4.0 are a different bellhousing pattern as well. As I recall, a 3.8 is the same as a 302/300.

T birds have had so damn many transmissions in em it's hard to tell. The 87 and 88 had the A4LD.

(reading back up) I see he has an 89, that was not the A4LD.... so sorry, my bad. NO the trans will not swap !
