Transmission went on my 2k2 XLT

17K miles on my wife's 2002 Explorer XLT (6 cyl.). A few weeks ago, I head it whining. Last week, when putting it in reverse, there was a 2-3 second delay then clunk. Few days ago, tranny fluid leaking all over. The seal blew out. They're replacing the valve body and torque converter. Anything else I should ask to be changed while the tranny is out? I mentioned that they should reflash the ecu.

 I'm pretty pissed that this happened so soon. Lost my confidence in Ford. Amazing they made it to 100 yrs. Once a tranny gives you problems, they never seem to get fixed right. I'm thinking about something new...something foreign.

 Already!!?? We have over 20k on out '02 4.6 and it seems fine. Must have gotten on made on a Friday;)

Well you havet the 4.6 which I should have bought. From what I hear, it's stronger all around.

Friday, I thought it was Monday....the workers were still hung over from the weekend????

No, No, No, they hurry up to finish everything up so they can get drunk!!:D I've driven both the V6 and V8 in the '02s and the V6 really isn't that bad. But the V8 is has got some kick to it. And and interesting sound when it gets up around 6k rpms. Good luck with the tranny. I'm assuming they're replacing it under warrenty?

The 4.6 has a stronger version of the 5 speed, it'll hold a little over 400hp and 450tq reliably.

Something must be wrong, my neighbor pounds on his Explorer, including track time, with not a single problem in 2yrs on it (02' 4.6 2wd Explorer w/ a 3.73 rear, has about 40,000 miles on it now), but he has the 4.6 V8.

If it matters our dealership just took in an 02' sohc V6 Mountaineer with about 76,000 miles and it's just like new with the original tranny. I took my grandmothers Towncar in for service, and wanted to get something to eat so they gave me the key's to that Mountaineer (we're friends with the dealer), and it was fine. Even with all that mileage in 2yrs, there wasn't a single rattle, and it shifted very smoothly. It was traded in on an new 4.6 Mountaineer, they told me the owner took the 4.6 for a test and couldn't believe how fast and powerful it was...he went home with a 4.6 Black Premier Mountaineer lol:D

Our dealer hasn't gotten any tranny failures with the 3rd gens, weird.

Then again, crap just happens, one of our friends has a new Toyota V8 4runner and just had the tranny replaced on his so......

Yes, all under warranty. They gave my wife a Grand Marquie to drive until they finish it up Monday night. They are picking up the tab on that too. Dealer so far has been great. We'll see what kind of work they do....yikes.
