:fire: Well I was messing around with my Exp and I was turning it around and when I put it in Rev it moved but sounded like it was binding, so I put it in drive and it went. Put it back in reverse and it moved fine. So I tought it was just a little glitch in the linkage. Anyway I moved it a little later and it seemed fine. Well I was moving it back and forth and it sounded like it was rubbing something. I put it in 4x4 high and low and 2wd to see if something might have been dragging. I don't know what the problem is with it, anybody got an idea?

ok I was just messing with my Exp, and I think I may have figured it out, see if this sounds right. I noticed that one of my hubs has came apart, I guess that means its broken. Anyways it sounds like the front differental is locking in with the hub. It just does it at low speeds or reverse, it drives fine as far as I can tell but when I slow down and hit the breakes it does the binding sounds. Does this sound like anything that has happened to any of yall.

well...if you got those auto hubs I've heard of people getting like a clicking sound from them when they break

will it cause binding, or dragging? It kinda seems like the brakes are making it pull but I've looked at them, and they're fine. I think the hubs might be locking and unlocking as I drive. Has this happened to anybody? I'm thinking of converting them over to manual locking hubs, but that will be a little while.

Well I have better news, if you can call it that. I was talking to some guys at the shop and we got to looking and my auto hubs are shot. Turns out they were locking and unlocking as I was driving  . Any way my brother and some of the guys toldme to just pull the outside part of the hubs off so it won't be able to lock at all. Now all I need to do is get a set of locking hubs and get them put on and I'll be good to go.

it's only a matter of time until those auto hubs break - on a sidenote, do you still have the original tranny in your X?

What exactly did you mean by this? Just trying to picture it. After cleaning my auto hubs, they are working fine.

The black part that has 4X4 wrote on it is what came off. Only one came off before but this time they both fell off.

And as far as I know its the factory tranny.

Sorry, just don't like being confused. The hub came off with the wheel still on?

You can rebuild the auto-locking hubs...it is cheaper than any other alternative I'm aware of. When my first set of hubs went to the great beyond (@83K miles, 2K short of being out of warranty), they made a terrible clicking sound.

No it didnt fall off of it, when I took the tires off they came right off with the rims. On a side note, after I took the black peice off its been driving alot better. Drove it 150 miles today, besides the miss, no problems.

Ok, not confused any more. You just lost the retaining washers. Mine didn't have them on when I bought my Explorer either; not a necessary item. So, I second Brian's post; at least thoroughly clean the hubs (no grease/use atf or gear oil). I also replaced the little bearings in the ends; about $5 each; a bit of a pain getting the little snap rings off tho.
