Can someone help me?
Long story short, about a year and a half ago, I had my a4ld rebuilt. The guy apparently. for whatever reason, cut my lines. He then, putting everything back, patched the lies together with some hose and hose clamps. No problem, it has been fine.

Recently, while taking out the old 4.0 (doing a swap w/ rebuild) I removed the lines and unfortunately did not take note of which one was which. I had planned on replacing the lines, but Ford told me that they weren't a replacement part, just to "make" my own and reuse the old fittings.

My two questions are:
Can I replace the lines entirely with "high quality" hoses?

And more importantly, does it matter which one is which?

Definitely use steel lines as far as possible, had bad experience with long sections of flexible (rubber hose) As far as which is which, not for sure, I would have wait until I got it running and found which line pumped fluid, but try and stay away from rubber lines, try steel braided instead

The lower line on the transmission is the output. From an external cooler is always a return line. I think fluid from the transmission usually feeds into the top of the radiator heat exchanger.
