trans dead after using 4wd

2000 Explorer, 4.0L EFI-OHV 140k

put car in 4wd, engine rpms went up to 3k. wouldn't come out of 4wd so i drove it until i came to a stop put it in reverse...heard a grinding sound and now cant shift into any gear.

any suggestions as to what the most likely problem is? did i ruin my transmission?

Its probably the transfer case thats stuck in the Neutral position.
In the future, dont drive the vehicle in 4wd on dry pavement or damage such as this will occur.

thanks for the quick answer...damage? that doesnt sound good

is there any way to try and unstick it myself or am i looking at an expensive repair bill?
