Hi,
I have a 2001 V8 AWD explorer with 112000 miles on it. Today after driving it, it was smoking. Trans fluid was all over the entire bottom of the truck. I cleaned everything and it looks like it is coming from between the trans and the transfer case.
Also, the bell housing was wet and there is a vent tube that looks like is dripping as well onto the 02 sensor. It looks like the Transfer case leaked onto the front drive shaft and is sprayed it all over.
The trans fluid and filter where changed about 7 months ago. I looked up some posts and decided to check the transfercase fluid. I opened up the fill plug and about 1.5 quarts came out on level ground. I thought the fluid should be up to the mark only? Is there a seal between the transfer case and transmission and if so is it easy to change. I am pretty mechanical. Any thoughts. Will try to get pics tomorrow when it is light out.

Thanks

Sounds like all of the seals blew - maybe the breather tube is/was clogged.

There is a seal between both of them, but it sounds more like the fluid leaked out of the overfill vent.

Is there a breather tube on the transfer case or the transmission. What would cause it to blow out of fthe breather. The fluid level was fine and have had no problems or leaks?
Thanks

There are breather tubes on both, they allow the transmission and transfer case to relieve pressure. It could have gotten clogged up and made it so the transmission couldn't vent itself and the pressure got so high that the seals blew out. This is just one thing that could have happened, it's not the answer for sure.

Any idea where the vent/breather tubes are located for the trans and the transfer case? I think I may have found the trans but cannot see anything on the transfer case.
Thanks

Ok, I took out the transfercase to replace the gasket between the tcase and transmission, the gasket looked fine. I also found the vent hose, it goes to the top of the bell housing. I looks like that is where my leak may be from the vent house. I am going to replace the gasket, my question is can you replace the seal that goes into the INPUT shaft on the Tcase from the trans? It looks good but is it easy to do and would this cause the tcase to fill up or do I have a trans problem?
