Hello all
I have a '04 Explorer Limited. 4x4/v8/. I live in MD. I bought the truck used, with 11,000 mi. It has been a great vehicle. I tow a pop up which is around 2,700 lbs loaded, a dozen times a year.
About two months ago I started noticeing a drone/humming noise and vibration starting at 45 mph and worst at 50 to 55 mph. It definitely gets better 60 and above. I thought it was the tires, which were original Bridgestone T/A with 60K miles. It sounds like bad tires.
I replaced the tires and the noise is still there. In fact it seems to be getting louder. Maybe it's just me.
The noise is still there if the truck is out of gear or put into 4x4 high.
Last month on a hot day, not towing, but loaded up, the transmission blew a spurt of oil out the vent. Major smoke. Scare the hell out of me. It was a one time shot. That's when I found out there's no trans dipstick. I had a dealer look at it and clean it up. They said once in a while the new sealed transmissions do that and there's no real reason for it or problem. They suggested turning the O/D off when going up steep grades. Any thoughts on what this noise is? Is my transmission or transfer case going to blow? thx
