transfer case clunk

I have a 2004 ford ranger with electronic shift. In 4 high it makes a clunking sound much like a chain jumping on sprocket. It doesn't shift into 4 low.
Could this be the shift motor itself or do I have bigger problems?

if it is not going into 4 low that could be the shift motor for sure,, it may not be moving the shift drum enough to get it fully into 4 high or low,,
take it off shift it by hand , try that first,,

if it is the chain jumping that is pretty serious and would be a replacement of the case, or a rebuild,,
try the shift motor first, it's a free check,, just some of your time well spent,,
