I changed the transfer case fluid on my 2008 4.0 4x4 and thought this might help someone who has never did it before.
First you will need the oil and the manual calls for Motorcraft XL-12 Transfer Case Fluid but Ford does not make it any more. They say that their Motorcraft LV transmission fluid replaces it. When I asked at my Ford dealer, they happens to still have a few quarts XL-12 so it might pay to ask, it was under $20 for the 2 qts you will need (3.0 pints required).

After jacking up the vehicle to a level height, I used four large wood blocks under the tires, you will see the two drain plugs, a 3/8 ratchet fits right into them. The lower is the drain and you fill from the upper. After draining, I cleaned the plugs and put a little thread sealer on the threads. I used a cheap plastic pump that you can get almost anywhere (Walmart, Harbor Freight, auto parts stores) to pump in a little over 1 1/2 qts, any extra will drain back out of the top hole. Put the plug in and clean up.

The new fluid is cherry red, mine old fluid was very dark and kind of scary to me with only 98K on it the vehicle. I don't know if it has every been changed before. While this is a very basic change I hope that it helps someone.
