transfer case issues

Can I swap the rear case halves of a 97 and a 98 to be able to use the VSS. The 98 doesn't have a port for the VSS and the 97 does. The two are identical in every way except for that. I have a 97 explorer xlt. 4.0, sohc, automatic 4x4.
