I don't have a good excuse for this error, other than stupidity, but I accidently changed out the fluid in my transfer case of my 2004 explorer xls with gear oil, mobile 1 75w-90 about 10 thousand miles ago. I was doing some other fluid change outs and must of had my head up my a....but when I realized what I did the other day, while checking fluids, I immediately changed out to to Merc ATF. The gear oil didn't seem to cause a problem, that I am aware of. I did quite a bit of research since then and discovered that probably the worst think I did was deprive the chain link plates the better lubricant flow at low temps since ATF is thinner and, of course the splash lubricant aspect is better with the thinner oil. I am hoping I didnt do much damage. The vehicle has 200,000 miles.. Any thoughts or recommendations?
