HI, I made a post a couple days ago about my tranny not holding in park, not being able to hold while engine braking (Loud shreiking sound while engine rpms dropped to idl), and then I found out that I also did not have reverse. The trans was rebuilt around 5K ago.

Its an '96 EB VB 4x4

The company that rebuilt the trans picked up the truck took out the trans and said the trans was fine - but, the transfer case had a melt down, blew out the front seal, contaminated the tranny fluid and caused the tranny problems.

This all sounds a little far fetched to me, because I have never heard of a transfer case that could work going forward, and not work in reverse, I've also never heard of a tcase leaking into the transmission, though I suspect it could.

What are everyones thought on this because I am PO'd about the whole situation, and I don't know enough to be satisfied with their explanation.

The tranny was under warranty, and I would hate for them to blame the tcase for the problems to get out from under the tranny warranty.

I hate to do this but I am going to double post this in the drivetrain section so someone may see it, I have to go take a look and the tcase tomorrow.

Thanks again,

Kurt

Ask for the T-Case and take IT somewhere else and have them look at it. The T-Case alone could not produce your problems. It "could" contaminate the trannie - I'm a skeptic, but I culd be wrong. You need independent eyes to check the T-Case and give you an opinion. You been 4 wheelin using it?

Thanks for your reply. It's never been 4wheelin, just used it a couple times on the road during a snow storm, but that was years ago.

Yeah, I am very skeptical. They jumped into the transfer case whithout calling me or getting my approval. I expected them to check out the tranny and let me know whats going on, they said wednesday they had the tranny out and were gonna check it out and let me know, thursday night I call them back and they tell me the tranny was fine but the tcase had a melt down.

If it blew the front seal, wouldn't it have leaked all over my driveway ?

Yeah I am skeptical, they went diving in to the TCase without my approval, they were supposed to check the tranny and let me know what was going on.

No four wheelin, just used it in the snow on the road a couple years ago.

If the front seal went, wouldn't it have leaked all over my driveway ?

Thanks,

Sorry about the double post, the board was acting funny, now I can edit out the second one.

see my post under the under hood and driveline section too

glacier991 i am sckeptical about it contaminating the tranny but my 96 did the same thing becouse of one little gear in the t case agian i have a break down of the t case if any one wants a copy i can email it to you just pm me

I saw the Tcase and somebody did a jim dandy of a job in there. The chain was stretched and they packed it full of clay or putty to keep the chain from clacking on the case. At first it looks like the fluid hardened, but you can touch it and mold it and its not greasy, except for the fluid that is coating it.

Their theory is that the dirty fluid contaminated the trans, and plugged up the throttle body solenoids.

Still doesn't explain to me why the tranny would not hold in park.

Tcase looks bad, but somehow I don't think that was the original issue, not saying I don't need a replacement tcase, but I think I could dump the chain and live without 4wd for the time being, but they won't put the thing back together without voiding the warranty.

Anybody have a decent tcase for a '96 explorer or know what exchanges ? I'm investigating all option cause I can't afford a new one.

thanks again,

Kurt

call 18006333340 ext 267 and talk to brian this is where i got my parts from the prices on the t case break down are from ford i could not find an alternative t case but you may come out better than me

Where in Jersey are you? I might be able to reccomend a couple of decent shops you can take your truck to. I've never heard of transfer case fluid contaminating the transmission fluid, that sounds kinda far fetched, even if it where possible there is a filter in the transmission. If you're looking for a new t-case check out www.car-part.com you can get good deals on t-cases on that site. It's basically a used part search engine. Or if you can turn a wrench you can always try Harry's U-pull it out in hazleton PA, sometimes they have explorer parts and theyre dirt cheap. I picked up a 1354e there for 50 bucks.
