Hey guys,

I am new here. I just bought a '92 Explorer 4x4 and well the 4x4 doesn't work. I have been reading up on the transfer case motor and figure that is my problem but just wanted some other opinions. I have tried hitting it lightly with a hammer and nothing. When I press the button on the dash I hear a clicking noise coming from some kind of electic module that is in the compartment where hte jack is in the back. Is this related to my 4wd at all, or what is it? Could that module be my problem or is it most likely the motor. Then if it is the motor is it going o harm anything if I remove the motor and drive the vehicle with the motor off while I try and repair the motor? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Kevin M

It's the shift motor. Yes, you can remove and drive with it out without problems. Read Brains Shift Motor Rebuild thread.

Like already mentioned you have the classic symptoms of a malfunctioning shift motor. The good news is 90% of the time the shift motor can be repaired and not require replacement. You can certainly buy a new unit on-line for under $200, but I would recommend you give the repair a shot. Read all the info in the Shift motor Rebuild thread. The write up and pictures are highly rated...
