Transfer Case Vent Hose

I notice today a line anging down under my '96 XLT. I crawled under and found that the hose seemed to be a vent hose for the front differential, and that there was a freshly bare hose nipple on the transfer case. I looked in the Hayes Manual to see if I could find a description of these two hoses bbeing connected, but there wasn't. I took a trip own to the used car lot to look under another Explorer and foun that both hoses, when intact, seem to run up over the transmission. Does anyone Know where these hoses terminate, and if (as I fear) the transmission has to be dropped to re attach them. Thanks!

Serious searching

I've spent the last 2 hours searching the web. The Ford parts guy was no help, "Uh there are lots of vent hoses listed in the system" The breather hose on the exploded view he printed out for me seems to come in two variants, but I am still unsure which one is correct. Also would a missing breather hose lead to thansfer case oil escaping? There is some oil behind the hose niple on the frame.
 






When I swapped in a BW1354 (from the stock 4405), I noticed both t-cases had "shorty" vent hoses. The vent extended six inches above the case. There's a 90º fitting off the nipple, a short amount of tube and then a 'vented' cap (to keep dirt from falling into the tube). I plan to extend the vent lines for the t-case, tranny and front diff up to the top of the firewall. Additionally, I'll do the same for the rear diff by running the vent line up behind the driver's side tail light.

Supposedly, there is a vent for the tranny but I have yet to find it (but I haven't looked very hard either). I plan to "T" the vent tubes for the tranny and t-case together. I would expect the tranny to have a similar arrangement as the t-case does. The front diff has a vent but it terminates somewhere near the alternator (at least it does on my truck) with a vent cap.

I doubt any of the factory vent lines were tied together. As for being able to find where they go (or came from), there might be enough room under there to search with your hands (where you can't see). You shouldn't need to drop the tranny for this.
