Ok well i have a 94 xlt explorer with the a4ld and i was having tranny problems where it would try to move but not unless at high rpms (about 3500) and i pulled my tranny out today and when i pulled off the torque converter. i went to dump the fluid out of it and it sounded almost like there was a bunch of rocks in it. im assuming that isnt normal. so i put my finger down the hole to where there are splines and tried to just push it off to the side and it moves...alot! would this be my problem and would it have possibly damaged anything else in the tranny? cuz if all i need is a new torque converter that would be alot better than a tranny for me lol thanks in advance.

You found your problem

Yes if you have lost all motion forward and reverse and all gears then, the torque converter is shot. Happened to me a few months ago. Just get a new torque converter shouldnt be more than $150.00 and get a complete back flush to get any metallic contaminants out from inside your transmission when the converter blew up, and change the filter of course :)

There are movable parts inside of the torque converter. Get a rebuilt torque converter, and rebuild the A4LD while everything is out. Flush the cooler lines with cooler cleaner.

oh well i didnt know that... i've only dealt with one explorer tranny b4 mine and i know the torque converter sounded nothing like what mine does...as for the rest were all front wheel drive cars i guess we all learn something everyday lol...but if i recall correctly the other explorer i did tranny work on (it was a 96 xlt) that torque converter made no noises at all when sliding it around, tipping it upside down, and the likes. cooler is already being flushed out as im also adding another one along with a tranny temp gauge when i get everything in order and back together.

everywhere i have seen a new torque converter is around 225 - 250 dollars? now i also need the stall speeds thing explained to me a bit what should i look for in a new torque converter is there anything thats "better" than stock that would be recommended?

call your closest oreilly's here is the link for the one in knoxville Iowa. $169.99 for a good torque converter. same one i just used. Of course I work at an oreillys and got it for $90.00 :) just call they can order it in. sorry to endorse.

LOL well since ur dong the endorsing lol why dont you order it and ship it to me hahaha it'd save me some money LOL! wouldnt that be nice LOL! well thanks for the help guys and just one more question? would this cause any damage internally to the tranny or not?

Don't worry about it, just go for stock.

ok

Drop the pan and you'll see any internally damaged pieces laying in the pan, but the trans internally should be clean, for the most part it probably has a lot of miles considering its a 94 so the condition of the clutches is unknown, but at least you don't have the 4r55e that my 96 exploder does, electronic trans. I rebuilt the whole shebang and was worrying about the condition of those solenoids the whole time until I got it running and everything was beautiful. I did put a hayden part no# 403, trans cooler in front of the radiator. looks cool and keeps the trans cool :) I used Valvoline Mercon V trans fluid. Have fun getting off the exhaust to take the trans down, lol. I had to cut three of the four bolts going to the exhaust manifold flange, take off the manifolds, two bolts broke in the head taking those out :( Then brought them up to my local exhaust shop to have them(bolts) heat extracted from the manifolds, friend worked there so it was a freebie :) Of course, I live in Chicago so salt on the icy roads make those things impossible to work on. Removed the Cat and put in a straight pipe. Dont worry about the after-Cat Oxygen sensor, it only is there to make sure the cat is doing its job. Fuel Effeciency over artificial pollution reduction :) that's my motto.

Uh oh

one more thing, i may have to contradict myself, the mechanic who helped me with the rebuild, my uncle. just reminded me that the forward clutch had almost no pressure engagement, when we tested it outside the trans. Now, if you were having any trans problems like hard shifting, slow engagement, then a rebuild might have to be necessary.

no i wasnt having any issues like that it was running fine no slipping smooth shifts still granted i would love to rebuild it sice it has many many miles on it lol but the funds for that just isnt there atm

ok, let me know how it goes, I sent you a friend request. Laters

lol the tranny is already dropped from the truck and i had to torch the y pipe to manifold bolts myself...which my gramp actually ruined my Y pipe in doing so lol but the tranny is out of the truck and when i dropped the pan to drain the fluid there wasnt anything but small metal flakes as for the after cat O2 sensor...mine didnt have one and i have a very "different exhaust setup hahaha i cut the dual cat inbetween both of them...gutted it and clamped on a glass pack muffler lol but without a Y pipe now i may just run straight duals lol
