My '01 with 104k miles has never had the automatic trans. fluid changed, and I plan on doing it or having a shop do it very soon, but I want to know how it should be done without doing the external filter mod (unless that is totally worth the extra work). From what I've read so far there are 2 ways to do it - drop the pan to empty the fluid or disconnect a return line from the cooler and cycle the ignition to pump it out. My truck needs it badly, even though it's shifting fine and everything, so I just want this job DONE. Which way would be cheaper if I have a shop do it? Which way would be quicker/easier if I do it myself? If the answer to both is disconnecting the return line, I will do it that way. I heard a special Ford tool is required to do it this way? Where can I find that (online)?
For dropping the pan, will I need to replace any gaskets? There has been oil residue on the trans. drain pan for a while now, but nowhere near enough to drip at all. Not sure if this is something I should be concerned about. Whatever way I get it done, will I need to clean or change a filter at all? Any parts, such as o-rings or gaskets I should replace while doing this job, please let me know so I can buy whatever I need soon.
