transmission help??

Please Please HELP w/ tranny...

I know this is not an explorer question or even a ford question but i really need help on this one...
I have a 94 S-10 that today i was driving home from work and stopped at a gas station.. everything was fine before i stopped but when i started to leave i started it and noticed my abs light was on.. when i started down the road the transmission would not shift out of first gear.. the speedometer wasnt working and the odometer wasnt working.. all other gages were fine..
i can drop it down to 1st then bump it to second but when i try to put it back in drive it will just rev up.. i really need help on this on.. and again sorry its not ford or explorer related.. but you have helped my so much with my x i figured you could help me with this..

I know squat about the S-10 or it's trannie, but modern electronic transmissions are run by the computer and it uses the speedo input to time things in some cases. You may have lost your speedo drive unit and it is screwing everyting up because the puter has no idea how fast you are going and hence when to time shifts. Take this with a HUGE grain of salt, it is an off the cuff response.

so someone said something about maybe a fuse being blown.. maybe one under the hood... does anyone know??

I too know squat, but since the ABS light came on at the same time as the shifting problem, it has to be a speed sensor related problem. Look on the diff housing and trans housing for an electronic sensor gizmo with a wiring harness attached. That would be the speed sensor.

If there's frayed wiring, that could have blown a fuse, so check the fuse boxes.

Also, a trouble code would help, if you can retrieve one.....

Mike, your trouble being a faulty VSS/speed sensor is just a guess on my part. I base it on the vehicle running fine when stopped, then the speedometer not functioning, ABS light on, and the trans shifting crazily.

Since all this happened at the same time, it has to be related. Look for a sensor either on the center diff housing, or on the tailshaft area of the transmission. It'll have a (smaller) 2 or 3 wire harness, not the many wire harness for the trans solenoids. Sometimes you can remove these sensors and clean the metal filings and goop off, and they'll work again. Might be worth a try. Also check the connector for tightness, and you might take it apart and spray with WD-40.

Like Glacier says, it's not likely a blown fuse would cause this, unless there's another problem such as frayed wiring or shorted sensor, making the fuse blow.

These are just guesses, and maybe gives you a place to start....good luck.
