Transmission Interchange

The 5 speed transmission in my '92 explorer, 2WD, 4.0 liter has lost second gear. A friend will give me a 5 speed transmission from a 2.9 liter engine '92 explorer 2WD. Before I drive to go remove it, I would like to know if it interchangeable with mine? I would rather swap transmissions instead of repairing mine if it is possible.

yes it will work all v6 bellhousings are the same 2.8 2.9 3.0 and 4.0

I have been told that the 5speed that fits the 4.0 and the one that fits the 2.8 though 3.0 are all the same except the case.......Is this true

The 2.8, 2.9, and 4.0 are all Cologne V6's and all share the same bellhousing bolt pattern. The 3.0 is a Vulcan engine and has a different bellhousing bolt pattern. Since most transmission have an integral bellhousing, you usually can't swap from a 3.0 to a 4.0.
