Come to find out i need a new transmission! 150,000 babied and mostly highway! I am lucky to get that many miles out of it but come on ford; i love this car but the transmission in the 02-05 model explorers are a POS!!!! All 150XXX miles was cluck cluck, bang bang; wait for it to go in reverse/drive; slam on breaks to miss a deere and then it wont move when given gas until once again another bang into gear. Was hoping it would last till i graduate from college; i guess not and now im stuck driving a 14yr old plymouth voyager (mini van) with 225xxx and its running strong! My next car will be a mopar or chevy! The older explorers are so much better in my opinion, my deceased grandmas 93 Explorer has way over 200XXX not counting pure hell my brother put it through before he sold it. That was the toughest car i have ever seen  I still see that car on the road today!

By the way go to carcomplaints.com and the 2002 explorer is on the top 10 of the most complained car EVER, mainly all transmission issues; cannot believe ford has not recalled these transmissions and fix the problem.

150k miles still isn't bad. I know what you're saying though I had over 250k miles on my 96 XLT and never broke down. I even took less care of it. Once mine goes out hopefully not within the next 3 years I have my eye on the 2014 Mustang. V4 300HP

I shouldnt complain to much; its been a good car, ive replaced 2 wheel bearings, a brake caliper, solenoid pack in the transmission and a sensor for the egr system. I have always changed oil every 3500 miles and flush transmission every 50XXX. The car looks brand new inside and out; ppl cant believe it has that many miles on it the way it looks. I will only put one transmission in it thats for sure! hopefully then it will last long enough until i can buy a new car.

About the (all stock)93 explorer my brother and i fliped it over in the hay field, fliped it back over with the tractor kept goin. Took it through woods, sumerged it in water, took it down the gasline hundreds of times and still going, jumped ditches, hills and everything in between. The only problems i recall that car having was that it leaked power steering fluid and the auto 4wd hubs had to be replaced, thats it. he sold it to his xgirlfriend and she still drives it 2day.

your lucky i did my first one at 80k and the other one at 133k hoping it last two more years

150k is not bad actually, that was indecently the designed life; lifetime fill 150k. Heck mine went at 50k. According to my trans guy they used light weight components to help increase the mgp. Good news, rebuild still going strong, knock on wood.

Transmissions are a problem on every Explorer ever made, be glad you got 150K out of yours. Bought my house and 40 cars over the years working at Ford as the trans guy lol.
