I got a 91 xlt 5 Speed that was have trouble shifting into first and reverse.

I have 2 other donor trucks that i use for parts so i ripped the transmission out of one for my install. I got a new slave cylinder(bench bleed it before installing it TRUST ME) so i put it in the donor transmission.

I opened up the top of my old transission just to see what was the problem?
i notice that the gears had a couple of teeth missing so i went to open the top of the donor to see if the teeth were fine (BIG MISTAKE).

When i removed the donor top of the transmission i must have knock the forks into gear and didn't notice it.After the insatll was done and everything back to gether t i went to install the shifter and it wouldn't go into any gear..GRRRRRRR.

After swearing and a temper tantrum i finally started to unbolt everything to try to take the tranny out again.
i didnt want to unbolt the bell housing becase i didnt want to spend
another 30 min trying to sqezze the trany back in over the y pipe..NOTE TO SELF next time unbolt Y pipe. so i losened the motor mounts and let the tranny rest as low to the ground as i could.

i wanted to try to see if the top of the transmission could be removed from the the inside of the truck/ I removed the plate that goes around the shfter and was able to reach all 10 bolts from the top. if you remove the senor from the side it just slides out nice. so i had the top out and was able to look down into the gears. i slapped the tranny into nutral and lined up the top and bolted it back on.

i slapped everything back together and the truck runs great. it took me about 3 days to do everything and busted up knuckles.

thats my horror story

injoy

Glad you got it fixed!

I know how much of a pain in the ass something that simple can turn out to be.

when I swapped mine I had to remove the Y-pipe... no other way - could not even remove the tranny.
