Some strange events with my 1995 Explorer (147k). About a year ago I was driving along and suddenly there was a cloud of blue smoke behind me. No indication anything was wrong from inside. Looked under and saw fluid from transmission all over the underside. Took it to the shop and they said the rear seal was bad and put in about a qt. and a half of fluid. I left planning to make an appointment soon. For almost a year now I have been driving it with hardly a drop of fluid (other than what one would expect from a trans. with 100k on it). Then about a week ago it did the same thing. Once I filled it back up (again about a qt. and a half) it is hardly leaking and all seems well.
Any idea what this could be, could a seal act this way. Should I try to get it fixed or just drive it making sure I have fluid on hand (in the car) since it seems to be an event every several months and is OK between these events. I might add that I don't think I added more than a half a qt. of fluid between events so it can't be leaking much when it's not creating an oil slick.
Thanks
