Transmission problem fixed! YEAH!

Howdy. Remember my tales about my '92 XL, and a faulty overdrive? Well, we fixed it.

The truck has the M5OD, which always popped out of overdrive. It always has since I bought it. It was a $300 truck so oh well :p

After dealing with it for about 8 months (not driven in winter though, and I have the Limited and my Buick Reatta) I decided it was time. I didn't want to pay for a full blown tranny rebuild (like $850 or so through ebay) and I didn't want to bring it in to a shop and have them go after just the overdrive problem, and then say that the whole thing is bad and needs to be rebuilt, since that would most likely cost more than ebay. So we went after a used one. The cheapest through car-part.com was $400 in New England. I'd tell you where if I could remember at the moment :rolleyes: . We had that shipped in and arrived last week. My dad was able to hack the salvage yard down to $375 + shipping charges (they said they'd charge whatever the shipper charged).

I worked 8-5 yesterday and decided to begin the swap when I got home. I had the Haynes manual and the ebay CD but de-taching everything was pretty straight forward. Later that evening I went to advance auto parts and picked up a new clutch kit (plate, pressure plate, hydraulic line tool, throwout bearing), slave cylinder (I heard those were weak) and the rear mount. Total was a flat $289. I found that the slave cylinder came with a throwout bearing, so I have an extra. Parts have a one year warranty; whatever good that is.

I slept over night :D

With my dad helping me, we pulled the old tranny out. I was not successful at all at getting the exhaust crossover pipe unbolted so we sawzall-ed that out of the way. There's not enough room to get the tranny out without removing it. We found the Luk clutch and pressure plate to have plenty of life left and we debated for a few minutes on whether to replace them or not. But since I'm going to keep the truck for a long time we decided to replace them.

So in the "new" transmission went. The slave cylinder needed a lot of bleeding to work right. It doesn't hurt to have clean brake fluid in the system, however. The clutch pedal seems to need less effort to depress it with the new parts installed.

With the exhaust crossover off, I took it for a spin on the freeway, and it worked! I can finally cruise normally on the freeway. previously, 4th gear at 70 mph put me at about 2900 RPM. It's much better now. As a plus, reverse slows down in the transmission faster. It has a 30 day warranty just in case, but I think it's going to work out.

I filled it up with advance auto parts house brand Mercon ATF. I'm going to run it for a couple days then fill it with Mobil 1 ATF.

As a quick fix after testing my dad and I put the crossover back with a couple of metal Fernco type couplers without the rubber (we're plumbers :D ). My neighbor down the street has a welding/exhaust/alignment shop and I'll have him weld it back up.
