transmission problem in 1st gear and reverse

I have a 2002 Explorer XLT with 125 K miles. I had transmission work done at around 80,000 to fix a shifting problem, but now I am getting a whining or rubbing noise when in 1st gear or reverse. The transmission also seems to bind up at times when shifting into reverse, and sometimes in 1st gear. The noise in 1st gear does get a little more quiet as it warms up, but it is still there. I would appreciate any ideas.

I took the explorer for another ride this morning and noticed that the noise is actually in both 1st and 2nd gear, and that it also makes the same noise when idling in park. Could it be the torque converter? Any reply is appreciated.

Get it going about 45 or 50 mph. While keeping your foot on the throttle, lightly depress the brake. Engine rpms should go up a little. If they dont and its still rough, the tc is bad.

I tried the 45-50 MPH test and the RPM's went up as they should. When I got back and had it in park, I shut the engine off it made a clunk. Does this and the other symptoms I mentioned earlier sound like they could be caused by the TC?

Since the tc went in and out of lock up at 45-to 50 properly, I believe the problem is in the transmission. Sorry!!

It turns out it was the tranny - the front planet bearing blew and took out a gear cluster. I guess this is another common ocurrence with the 5R55W transmission. Thanks for your help!
