ok so i have a 98 ford explorer XLT and ever since i bought it about a year ago iv had trouble with the transmission. the truck had no work done to it when i purchased it. what i mean to say is it was still a family car. the only problem was that the 4X4 didn't work. so when i brought it to my transmission guy he told me after taking it apart that something in the transfer case broke apart and made its way to the transmission and that i needed it to be rebuilt. since he was a friend and did it for a reasonable fee i had the work done. everything was going fine until i started to do work on the truck such as SOA, new shocks, sloped 3in BL and new 33in pro comp muds. after about a 2 months i noticed that my automatic transmission seemed to be engaging gears quite violently, jerking from one to another. and then while driving on the parkway one day my RPMs jumped from 3,000 to 6,000 while doing 40 mph on the on ramp. i knew something was wrong and immediately got off the parkway and i barely made it to my mechanic. i could feel the truck slipping in and out of gears and i had no reverse by the time i got to the mechanic. anyway when he looked at it again he noticed transmission fluid leaking from the overflow valve on the top of the transmission case. he told me that the reason my transmission was acting this way was because of the bigger tires i had put on my truck. he explained that the automatic transmission is set to engage different gears by the cars computer and by changing the size of the tires and letting the transmission switch gears thinking the normal stock tires where still on, i was ruining my transmission, overheating it. he also said if i kept doing what i was doing i would eventually need to get my transmission rebuilt again and he said he could not insure me as long as the tires where on the truck.
So my question is how can i fix this problem more or less. is there anyway to change when the gears engage so that my truck doesn't jerk in and out and i don't hurt my transmission anymore. im not sure if this is a re gearing issue or if i can tell the cars computer when to engage gears in my transmission based on my new tire size.
HELP!!!
