I have an 02 eddie bauer with 139,000 miles and i just noticed a week ago that the auto transmission is shifting irregularly....what could it be and how might i try to fix it?
Here's what's happening:
i notice it most when on the interstate...cruising around 65-70, usually when the road starts to incline you'll notice your vehicle will slightly slow down in speed as your climbing the hill, so to compensate you'll give a little more gas to stay at the same speed.
when i do this the explorer seems to lag behind a bit, not maintaining speed it doesn't miss.....after a few seconds the tranny will roughly shift to the next gear. You can feel the jolt and hear the hammer drop.
This doesn't happen all the time but it's starting to happen more frequently...plus i'm now compensating by giving more gas to speed up rapidly to bypass this issue.
the plugs and plug cables are fine so that's nothing to consider
any ideas? I thought about changing the tranny fluid but am being advised against it if possible. it's never been changed.
I'm getting the idea that this might be something worse than a fluid change, but probably the first place to start would be to do a complete flush and replace and see if that helps. If not, then take it in for a more in depth look.
there's no dipstick to check the tranny fluid level, should i maybe see if it just could be low, and add some before a complete flush.
A while ago, mechanic told me about how flushing could remove the inner "glue" created with the original fluid and if nothing is actually wrong, this wouldn't be the best idea. I wasn't having this issue then though so his answer might be different now.
ANy thoughts on what this could be and how i should go about fixing it?
thanks
