Anybody got any idea what happened???? I was backing into my driveway today when I heard a small clunk, that is when it stopped moving backward. It seems to be just fine in forward gears. Any suggestions on what could be wrong. It is a 1998 explorer 4x4 with about 125,000 km. Thanks for any help

Not to be a dick but did you run something over?
When was the last time your transfer case was drained and filled?
When was the last time your trans fluid was changed?
what about the differentials?

Sounds like it could be a trans problem. Did you put it in park before it was stopped completely?

If it was a broken band in the trans, wouldn't it also not have first (or second?) gear as well? i thought it used the reverse band for reverse and 2nd, doesn't it? (those slush-boxes are all so confusing...)

And shouldn't this thread be in the transmissions forum??
