Transmission problem

I have a 1996 ford explorer, a few months back I started having trouble with my transmission now it goes into reverse fine, but when I put it in drive I have to get it into high rpms for it to barely move forward. I don't know much about transmissions I was hoping somebody on here would know what the problem is

First things first, have you checked the fluid level and color?
