Transmission question

I have a 2002 explorer XLS and just recently the tranny just started to go on me, now I know that the transmission on these explorers are pretty much problematic since they are a sealed transmission which I personally think FORD screwed up on this one. Does anyone know what is the difference from a 5r55w transmission (which I think I have on my ex) to the 5r55s transmission, can I use either one of them?

Also would it be better to rebuild? how much do they normally run for a complete rebuild one shop quoted me $3500 for a rebuild with a 3yr 100000 warranty

These are not completely sealed like Ford wants you to believe. Check the sticky threads on top of the transmission section called the 5R55W fluid fill, and the 5R55S swap for more information.
