Transmission Question

My fiance has a 1996 Explorer V8 5.0L Automatic. She was driving it about a month ago and it was doing fine...no slipping, knocking or anything. She parked it and the next time she went to drive it she put it into gear and nothing...no foward or reverse in any gear. Car runs just fine otherwise. Her "mechanic" said transmission is completely gone, but he didnt even put it on the lift. Any ideas? Im going to check vacuum lines in the morning.

could be many things, is the drive shaft still connected? u joint completely busted? could be inside the transfer case also.

I checked the drive shaft and all the U joints. All are still connected and in good shape. With it being all wheel drive how do I check the transfer case. I drive a Powerstroke truck so this explorer is alot tighter and a little different to work on.
