When my overdrive light started blinking on my 95 Explorer, I took it into AAMCO. The truck shifts rough between first and second, I have noticed this. They pulled the codes and one code pointed to the EGR valve. The other pointed to slipping in 3rd gear.

They are quoting me $495 for the tear down and $1243 for the overhaul kit. (I think the kit includes the labor for the tear down). Then when they have it all apart, they say they can give me an accurate quote for any additional parts and labor. Does this seem reasonable?

Some others may tell you different, but I think it would be worth it to just reset the computer and continue to drive it until it starts acting up again. That's what mine was doing and it's been atleast 10K miles now and it shifts fine.

And it only has 56K

Good news!

The truth comes out! My wife says she was driving around in 2nd gear and that is when the O/D light started flashing.

Anyway, they cleared the codes and it is shifting ok for now. Keeping my fingers crossed.
