I rebuilt the transmission on my 2005 Mountaineer. The rebuild included the usual rebuild parts along with the sun gear and planetary gear assembly, servo bore holes and the solenoid plug. It is all back together and now it only wants to go forward and it wants to go forward in every gear including park, reverse and neutral. Any ideas?

When I replaced the solenoid plug I checked the wiring diagram a dozen times since the wire colors on the new plug were all different than the wiring harness on the car, I'm sure they are right according to the instructions that came with the new plug.

I'm not sure about the accuracy of my torque wrench so could over tightened bands cause this?

Could there be something stuck in the valve body?

How about a bent connection in the solenoid plug on the solenoid itself.

Any help would be appreciated.

Your cable that connects to the shift lever could be out of adjustment. Or the rod that goes between the lever and valve body could be off.

When I did mine I had to readjust the cable. It is adjustable on the trans end.

Just a thought.

Thanks for the input. I already tried the cable adjustment. I even disconnected the cable, put the shift lever into park and manually put the shift arm on the transmission into park. I did the same thing for reverse and neutral and it still wants to go forward.

It seems odd that the wire colors would all be different . If it is a replacement plug I would think the colors would be the same.

What about the switch that is on the lever? Were you able to adjust that? It has a line on the top if I remember.

Yea, all of the wire colors were totally different not just a slight difference. And, if the switch you are talking about is the black switch on the outside of the transmission at the shift lever then no I haven't tried to readjust that. I think you can only put it on one way and appears to be used for a fine adjustment. I will check it but since I don't have park, reverse or neutral I think I need more than a fine adjustment.

If ya wanna go forward all the time, let's consider how that could happen. First, if your selector lever and cable are working properly, the PARK pawl should be locked in "P", so she can't move forward or reverse.

If she wants to go forward at all other times, including selector in "N", one of two things is wrong: either the Transmission Range Sensor is fu%6ed up, and is sending power to either shift solenoid a, b, or c, OR, one of those solenoids is stuck in position to cause forward gear drive.

I would put the damned thing up on jack stands, disconnect the connector at the transmission, and then apply power to each solenoid one at a time individually, to determine if one of them is STUCK ON. To do these things, you need accurate wiring diagrams, and an understanding of how the PCM turns solenoids on and off.

Just my thoughts. imp

Check the manual valve pin.

Thank you drdoom, I was thinking the same thing as one of the three things I needed to check when I drop the pan again. I put the two pieces together when I raised the valve plate into position but, as I was holding the plate up with one hand and fumbling around for the bolts with the other the plate dropped a couple of inches. I normally recheck everything after doing something like that but, I don't remember rechecking in this case.

And, thank you for the link rwt101, I'm sure that will be helpful information after I put the pan back on. I didn't know about those two alignment lines on the range selector.
