Hello all.

It's been a while since being here but I have tricky question that I hope someone here will know before I visit the mechanic. I have a 1999 Explorer Sport 4.0 OHV 4wd with about 254k miles and a rebuilt transmission from 2014. Today I made a trip to my parents to work on their home. the 40 mile mostly highway trip was flawless. I hooked to my Dad's 6ft trailer and went to the home improvement store and got about 200 lbs of material. the return trip was also fine. While enroute home the truck was running at a very high rpm and the O/D off light was flashing. Pulled over, disconnected the negative terminal to reset the O/d, no go.

My question is could this issue be a switch or a valve body issue?

Thanks in advance.

If the transmission up-shifted through it's gears normally, and rpms seemed higher than usual at cruising speed, but not excessively high in any gear, look for the Torque Converter Clutch to be not engaging. Often caused by failed TCC Solenoid. Trouble code might reveal the problem. Get them read, free most parts stores. imp

Thanks imp. The issue seems to be I think the truck thinks it's pulling a load and went crazy. No CEL or codes to pull.

Don't disconnect the battery, and get it on a decent scanner. Parts house scanners probably won't read Ford transmission codes. If the TCIL is flashing, there are codes stored. Imp is likely dead-on, torque converter most likely.

Thx drdoom. I'll have a technician take a look this week.
