I'm new to the site and have done some searches but surprisingly haven't found what I'm looking for... My '04 XLT exhibits the occasional 2-4 second delay when shifting into gear (typically reverse, but has happened in drive too). I had the recall for this problem done (change tranny fluid) but that didn't change anything. I'm ready to go back to the dealer. Any suggestions? I saw somewhere else it could be the solenoid. Thanks!

The reverse/first delay is a common and harmless problem that has plagued this transmission from it's earliest origins. Some manage to fix it and for others it is elusive. The good news is that it is harmless... just don't get on the gas until it is engaged.

Btw how many miles on your tranny ?

Just hit 30k. Geez, I'd hope Ford has a real fix, as before I learned I might have to wait a few seconds, I had some hard bangs into gear because of stepping on the gas expecting to go. This problem is a little unnerving when your driveway is on a 40mph road with a semi blind curve coming from one end... Thanks.

Well keep after the dealer to fix it, and let us know how it goes and what they do. Wish I could offer a slam dunk solution.

Well like my boss said one time, "if you think it's a long ride to work, move closer." If you want to keep the Ford, you probably should look for a house where you can pull down the driveway and see a 1/4 mile in each direction.....now that's funny right there.....

Welcome to this forum! If you are up to removing the pan, and doing some work on this yourself, one thing you could try would be to install the double wiper, or viton seals that go onto the lw/reverse servo. Here is the information for these parts from WWW.TransmissionpartsUSA.Com: 23256K double wiper low/reverse servo kit ($1.52), Transtec viton seal kit for the
low/reverse servo 23256KA ($2.70).
