Alright if anyone can tell me if my tranny is going out or if they know what might be wrong please reply....

When I start to accelerate the rpm's are right on track with the gear...but as i start to reach 40 mph (still accelerating) my rpm's hang out at about 2,500 but once the needle hits 40mph the rpms jump up to 3,000 and just reves....the ford dealership told me its probably my tranny slipping...but I think they're just trying to take advantage of a girl! =)....By the way I don't think I'm really going 40 thought because my speedometer is off by like 5mph cuz of the bigger tires....

Thanks for reading!

Sounds like slipping trans to me. How many miles on the truck? Ever had the trans serviced? I'd forget about the dealer and take it to a independent shop and see what they say.

I have 106,000 miles and I've onl owned it since 97,000 miles so I'm not sure if the people before me ever serviced it! But I will go check with someone else...I sure hope its not the tranny slipping!!

When you have it serviced have them check the torque on the valve body bolts, It could be something as simple as a loose valve body, or even a bad VB gasket. If you take it to a trans shop they may be able to check quickly.

Alright thanks, well I probably won't get it done for another week or two cuz I just ordered my new IAC cuz that was cracked! Got it for a good price of $67 (FordPartsNetwok.com) though! I'll keep you informed after I get the Transmission serviced!

I'd be leary of driving it. If something simple malfunctions in the trans, it could mess up something serious.

Well I have to get to work and school which 30 minutes away from my house....But it only does it every once in a while maybe once a day...

Well I had my tranny diagnosted today and it showed that there was nothing wrong...so if anyone can come up with any ideas let me know!

Did they do a pan drop, and fluid/filter change? Unless they dropped the pan there could be something inside that didn't show up.(IE valve body bolts like SteveVB suggested.) If they didn't I'd have a fluid/filter changed, just because it is due anyways. While they had it down, I'd tell them to poke around in there.

well do you mean get the whole transmission flushed or just the filer and oil changed?

A fluid/filter change is good, a flush may be better. It depends on who you ask, and how bad the fluid is.

Well I'm thinking I'd might as well get it flushed because I have know idea if the people before me ever did it...

What is the condition of the fuild? Nice fresh red color or black with a burn't smell?

There are two different maintenance options that the repair shops will have for you too choose from...

1. Transmission Service - Replace the tranny filter, pan gasket and the fluid in the bottom of the pan. You can do it if you don't mind getting a little dirty :-) for about $30.00 or the shop will charge you about $50.00

2, Transmission flush - where the old fluid is pumped out (including the torque converter) and new fluid is added (using a tranny flushing machine). Runs about $80.00 here in the SF/Oakland bay area if you can find one.

I would change the filter first then do the flush.

I have the same exact problem (When I start to accelerate the rpm's are right on track with the gear...but as i start to reach 40 mph (still accelerating) my rpm's hang out at about 2,500 but once the needle hits 40mph the rpms jump up to 3,000 and just revs) I have normal size tires so it occurs at 35 mph. It only happens in that gear, but not all of the time. I took it in and had the transmission serviced (Transmission Service - Replace the tranny filter, pan gasket and the fluid in the bottom of the pan) they said my transmission looks great! (98 explorer w/80k) Any suggestions?

Vaguely sounds like when the transmission shifts into OD for 4th gear the band isn't being applied, or not enough, or for whetever reason you are getting no OD engagement.

As I posted elsewhere, my husband is having the same problem you all are describing with his transmission.

His seems to shift more normally when the vehicle is cold. He notices that it won't shift into the next gear at lower speeds unless he lets up on the gas for a bit. Then it will shift into the next higher gear and the RPMs will drop. This is not an overdrive problem as it is taking place at much lower speeds 10-40 MPH or so.

We had it into the transmission rebuild shop in Fort Dodge Iowa and they said it would have to be rebuilt again. However, he has been driving it this way since August as he loves this vehicle and can't be without it. He has 330K miles on it and doesn't want to spend another thousand on it and then have the motor go out.

Yet another person, I've had similar problems. Currently if i make a 90 degree turn like into a street and accelerate I will slip at about 15mph @ 3000rpm for about 10 seconds, then it will lunge back into gear with no sounds.

Now for the fun part. Whenever I go through thick mud and have some fun, I lose OD all together and it wont shift out of 1st unless i let off the gas at 30mph then go on it again. Then in about an hour its back to normal. Transmissions are fun stuff...

I totally forgot about this thread...my bad I've been worrying about my brakes now, my tranny still sips everyonce in a great while but I'm going to get my filter changes next week because I just spent money getting an oil change and my gear oil changed...but I'm pretty sure its just the filter (I hope!)

that sounds like the problem i was having but instead of being a 3-4 shift mine was a 2-3 shift it was doing it at. the band wasnt engaging cause it was snapped. is you rOD light flashing yet? you definately need to have it looked at via a pan drop. inspect the fluid, look for peices of metal, etc. check VB bolts and gasket. depending on price. have it looked at thoroughly.
