I have a 2001 4dr SOHC, with 36,500 miles. I had 31/10.5/15 BF'ers installed, well two in the front were bran new, but the two in the back were stollen off my work truck. So they have about half tread left, but nontheless smaller diameter. Just before a down shift the tranny feels as if it slipps, letting the engine rev free for an instant, more on up-hill goings. My X has the auto 4wd, maybe the diameter difference is playing a part, hell if I know. It seems that it has Ford stumped too. I had the 36,000 mile transmission service, so the fluid level should be good. I know Ford and there transmissions. PLEASE HELP!!

I am having the same problem on my 96 with the 4r55, however mine only "slips" going into 3rd gear either by downshift or upshift. Mine has also started hesitating to engage the gear when I shift from neutral to OD but it "takes" just fine if I skip OD and go straight to 2. A couple of other things I've noticed are a slow "thump" coming from the general area of the tranny and a reluctance to downshift.

No one has been able to diagnose this problem either, maybe someone on the board has had a similar problem.

Muddlover-i had the EXACT same probelm a couple weeks to a month ago-i took it in to a certified NTA shop and 2 days later it was rebuilt-new computer, internal (hard) parts, fluid flush and new fluid, and labor came out to less than 2,000-it runs amazing now-i can barely feel it shift, it never drops, and there is no rev in between 2-3, 4-3 like it used to-plus it comes w/a 5 year warranty-there is a book w/NTA certified shops throughout the nation i can give you a few in your area if you're interested in getting it rebuilt, you also 01Explorer if you're interested.....

Thanks, my zip is 24614 if that helps you in locating the shops. I hope its not going to be that expensive but my gut tells me it will.

I took my 97 to the delarship last tuesday for tranny problems. It would slip when taking off from a stop, but only when it was cold. When it ran for a few minutes, it was smooth. I had to leave it overnight so they could experience the problem.

They dont know what it is yet but they think the tranny will have to be rebuilt. I'm glad that I bought that waranty now.
