I posted about this problem before in our 1995 EB and want to update.
At the first transmission fluid change, we found a piece of metal about 1 inch square stuck in the pan magnet. Thought it might just be a leftover from the last shop rebuild as we heard no clunks this round of transmission problems.
Changed filter/fluid and inspected the solenoids which tested fine. The 1-2 sticking seemed improved but still present. BTW the fluid was brownish red, not bright red, with no smell. He noticed the valve body gasket was torn up near the servo area.
The next fluid change he dropped the valve body to replace the valve body gaskets. This time he saw a piece of metal stuck in an ~2" hole above the valve body, about 5 inches to the rear of the servo assembly hole in the valve body. He was able to dislodge the chewed up piece of metal with a needle nose.
Changed the fluid again, new gaskets, still the same problem as before--still driveable with pampering and has been for six months.
At least we know that it truly is a hard failure and that a major rebuild is necessary. He thinks it's a broken band but can't tell which one from the diagrams and manuals.
We are considering parting with the Explorer and buying a VW diesel wagon rather than spending the money/time on a transmission rebuild. After all, it does have 330000 miles and he recently dinged the rear corner on a tree.
Really appreciate everyone's help and advice on diagnosising this problem.
