1991 explorer sport
I have a 1991 ford explorer sport that has a mitsubishi fm146 manual transmission (yes this is correct, prior owner swapped it out when his m50d grenaded on him) and it has lasted almost 10 years but is ready for a rebuild/replacement.

Anyways I found a manual transmission out of a 1996 4wd ranger with a 2.3 motor and was trying to make sure it is completely swappable.

From what I have read it is an m5od transmission but will comfirm when I go look at it.

I know the fm146 and m50d are swappable but is the bellhousing from a 2.3 m5od the same as the bellhousing from a 4.0l m5od?

I am pretty sure the transfer cases are swapable and the lengths of the transmission are the same minus shifter location.

Any input is appreciated,
Thanks

the m5od bellhousings are integrated arent they

Yup.

The only M5ODs that will bolt up are from a 4.0l (OHV or SOHC will work) or a 2.9l.

Are the shifters interchangeable between the fm146 and the m5od?

No.
