Hey. I have posted on this site before. Here is my problem.

I have a 1999 XL with a 4.0. Auto 4x4.

I was driving it today and I made it about 15 miles from my house when the Transmission seemed to pop out of drive and it made a terrible grinding noise until I came to a stop. When I went to take off again, the engine revved and made the grinding noise again. It grinds in drive and reverse. I decided to try 4 low and i was able to drive it home slow (around 35 MPH) with no problem. Once I made it home I tried 2 wheel and 4 high again and it went into gear with no problem. I drove it around my neighborhood and it popped out of drive again and did the same thing but 4 low works fine.

My question is do you think it is the Transmission or the Transfer case? Thanks for your help.

If it works ok in low range it sounds like the transfer case, for grins drain the oil from the tc and see if there is any metal pieces in it.

Transfer case. I have done two of these, same thing, shift fork problems, wear in the case halves, it causes the range collar to pop out, the grinding you hear is the teeth stripping off of the range collar. It is toast, but easily repaired in your driveway. Sometimes it is pretty cheap, just depends on how much you want to put in it. There is an excellent STICKY thread here how to rebuild that case.
