Hello guys! Looking into a small travel trailer and trying to see what I can tow. Went into the towing rabbit hole for like 2 weeks. I believe I have a 6f55 transmission with a 3.65 ratio. Tried like hell to go through the ford towing guide I downloaded from my fords website. Attached is a pic of the door tag.

Thanks for your help!
George

Hi George. Two important things you didn't mention is, whether or not you have the factory-installed tow package and what size engine do you have. If not the factory tow package, the maximum towing weight is 2000 lbs.

I have the V6 4wd without the tow package but I went ahead and purchased the cooling duct and installed it already. Purchased the tow mode switch and swapped it out. When I activate the switch it illuminates the tow mode on my dash. I have the sway control on my settings on. Also have a class 3 hitch installed as well with combo 7 pin 4 pin. 2000 pounds sounds extremely low for a V6! My four cylinder Santa Fe had over 2000 pound tow limit! I had towed my bass boat with it. You could tell I was towing it though. On the Explorer it didn’t feel like I was towing anything when I pulled the bass boat.

With the factory installed tow package you could tow 5000 lbs but with an aftermarket install you are legally limited to 2000 lbs. I believe the towing specifications mentions that and it has also been mentioned in this forum many times. See note #3 in the diagram I posted above. The factory package includes a bigger radiator and a different transmission, 6F55. Without the factory tow package, the Explorer comes with the 6F50.
Check out this thread and in particular, post #370. Did NOT get Factory Tow Package, Now What?

That’s so amazing that a 6 cylinder Explorer can be out towed by a 4 banger hyundia!!! I don’t think it has to do with anything legally though! As long as you don’t go over gross vehicle capacity. It’s probably more for ford liability and warranty. Either way it doesn’t matter though. I’ll use it for. 2500 pound travel trailer. If the trans messes up I’ll replace with a 6f55 myself. No big deal for me.

As far as the legal aspect goes, once the vehicle leaves the assembly plant, the towing capacity/weight can not be legally changed.
