We think our trani has a problem we can start the 96 Explorer and drive sometimes 4-5 miles sometimes only 1-2 miles and it just stops....the engine keeps running but it won't move... wait 1/2 hr and it will drive again same distances very unpredictable.
Makes for DANGEROUS driving.
ANY IDEAS about what I need to check? I think it is in the trani but don't know what to check or where to begin. Can't trust it even enough to make it to a dealer and can't afford one anyway. Have deep snow and desperately need it to get out! Please give me any information you can. Thanks.

Welcome to this forum! Did you check the fluid level? Was the filter ever replaced? Automatic transmissions rely upon hydraulic pressure to shift. How many miles does it have? You might have a bad EPC solenoid or valve body gaskets. The gaskets expand when they get hot, and might cause the symptoms that you are experiencing.

Thank U :) for such a speedy reply especially during the Holiday Season.
Plenty of fluid, filter has been changed, but we don't know where the EPC is located AND is it hooked to vacumn or electricity...does it control the shifting? Once it kicks into high that is when it seems to kick out of gear and just sit still for at least 15-30 minutes.
We can drive all day in low gear but when it goes to high gear it quits therefore we don't think it is a gasket problem. I am 70 years old and have worked on vehicles all my life including in the service...but this newer stuff is baffeling to me.
Is the EPC an electrical post control? and where would it be located?
HAVE A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A TRULY HAPPY NEW YEAR.

The EPC solenoid is located on the side of the valve body. It's an electric part. You have to lower the pan to see it. Check the sticky thread on the top of the transmissions section called the 5R55E valve body rebuild diary for more information.

Thanks but what is the sticky thread? Is there a picture of these parts somewhere that I can print off?

Thank U:) SOOOOOO Much for sending me to your pictures they truly are worth more than a thousand words! Being the age I am I have a hard time getting around the sites and understanding the newer vehicles.
If I had your address I would send you some bucks for the help! I live in Goldendale, Wa. I see you are in Bremerton. Would like to meet you sometime. Thanks for the help.

There are quite a few of us guys from this site, that do meet up every once in a while to do some wheeling, or just general BS'ing when we get together for some BBQ....

I live in Bremerton, and work in Silverdale. They wanted to call Silverdale 'Goldendale' but since there was another town already called that, they went with the next best thing...true story...now if they can only name a Platinumdale, and Bronzedale we would have the complete set! LOL
