Trying to install new pads for the front brakes of my '95 Explorer (w/ dual calipers), I'm having a hard time getting their ears to fit inside the stainless steel "slippers" on the caliper mount.

They're the same slippers I removed, which are in good shape. I cleaned them, coated them lightly w/ brake lube, and also filed/wire brushed the places where they mount to eliminate crud, rust, etc.

As far as I can tell, the new (aftermarket) pads have the same dimensions as the old ones. Is there a trick to getting the pads into their correct locations?

I’ve had to dress the “ears” of the pads during several brake jobs on my Explorers.

I think what you are describing, are the parts that have to be spread as the pads are put on. It's not too hard to do it, but always do the inner pad first. Then place the outer pad next to where it needs to go into the caliper, and slowly put pressure on the pad towards the inside at an angle, and towards where it needs to go. The right pressure will get the "ears" to open enough to start it. Once it starts, then it's no trouble to push it the rest of the way.
