Tricks to replacing 5.0 water pump

If its broken off above the cover, try a stud extractor like the one I posted above:

Why did you tap the hole in the pump? There should be no water coming out of the hole, right?
Mine is broken off about an inch above the front cover. I was just going to leave it.......

The bolt that had the piece sticking out, I just relied on the RTV. I was a bit nervous about what lay beneath the hole on the other side that had the bolt broken below the surface of the cover, so to err on the side of caution filled the water pump bolt hole with a pipe plug first then RTV'd the cover. It was probably unnecessary but I had to redo it once before due to the gasket slipping during installation, and I'd be damned I was going to take it apart a third time...
