Thanks to info I found on these forums, I was able to replace one of the O2 sensors on my 97 EB V8. I had to remove my console (which includes the trip computer), cut the carpet to get the panel on top of the hump, and remove the panel. After replacing the sensor, I wanted to take a test drive, but I didn't want to assemble all of the console in case something wasn't right. It cranked up no problem, however, the automatic headlights didn't come on. I tried turning them on with the headlight switch and that didn't work either. I reinstalled the console and trip computer, and the auto headlights started working. Is this normal? Not all Explorers have this trip computer. Why is it needed on mine? And, what other controls go through this computer?

Thanks.

It sounds like you disconnected the lamp out warning module that is located under and a few inches to the rear of the trip computer. Not all Explorer's have the lamp out warning module.

When I press the "System Check" button, I get several lamp status reports, i.e. "Headlamp OK if on", "Taillight OK if on", etc. Does this verify that I have the lamp out warning module?

If you have the message center, you have the lamp out warning module.

Another interesting observation. After this little project, my problematic intermittent wipers have fixed themselves. They used work properly only on continuous slow or continuous fast. On any of the intermittent settings, they MIGHT work for one or two swipes, then they would stop mid-swipe. Now, perfect.

I would expect "intermittent" interval wipers to be caused by the multi function switch. I need to replace mine because of a problem I had with the washer not working. It 's working fine now but I know it will come back.
