I have a 97 Explorer, 4.0 SOHC and a 01 RAM, 318 that are displaying a PO455 trouble code (gross evap leak). Does anyone know of the most common componet to replace in order to fix this problem?

sounds liek a vacuum line or some busted part of the evaporative canister area

Check the gas cap and the purge solenoid above the spare tire

Indeed, the most common problem to cause that is a fuel cap left off/loose. It could also be caused by a fuel cannister purge solenoid that's stuck in the open position. (It's located under the battery tray on the fender). I had a evab system small leak last week, and it turned out to be the vacuum test port hose had fallen off whatever it's supposed to be clipped to and was rubbing on the AC pulley. Had it rubbed through even more, it could easily have caused a gross leak.

My 97 SOHC is also throwing off a PO455 CEL code grrrrrrrr
I replaced the purge solenoid about a year ago but recently the light came on again. While driving slowly I can smell "little puffs of gas" once in a while.

Has anyone heard of this one?
While getting gas: the gas pump kepts popping off before the tank is filled. Often, an annyoing number of times.

I vaguely remember reading that can indicate a problem in the evap system, but I can't remember which component.

Does this rings a bell with anyone? It might help narrow the problem.

Thanks
