I am trying to replace my brake pads on my 1997 Explorer XLT with 4WD. I removed the calipers with ease, yet i need to get the discs machined and they wont come off. I have tried messing with it with screw drivers and mallets. I also set the e-brake on the lowest setting and it only moves so far and is still held in. Here is a picture. I am not sure if the center is supposed to come out, it may just be rusted to the disc, or it may be part of it. If anyone has an idea it wuld be greatly appreciated.

The centre stays put and the disk slides off. Usually it is rust at the centre of the hub and the e-brake shoes catching on a ridge of rust that hangs them up. If you are sure that you have the e-brake adjusters backed off all the way, try a little penetrating oil at the centre and a few whacks with a plastic mallet to knock it loose.

Thanks for the prompt response, i have tried this over and over. And still am at the current time, but no amount of penetrating oil and mallet use is availing. If anyone has another idea or a tool for this id be open to anything. Well im back off to pound the disc and i will return shortly.

You messed with the adjustment screw on the back?

If you did, then put it in neutral, and tap it from behind from the only spot accessable, and turn it, tap, turn it, tap, etc.

Might was mildly stuck, that's how I removed it. Just remember to put it back on park before lowering the truck. Almost ran myself over =(.

edit: I hope jackstands are there, and just hiding due to the point of view.

I was fixing my e-brakes last weekend and had a really hard time getting the rotor off because the e-brake actuators were seized. Keep wiggling the rotor and prying on it gently working your way around, the clearance between the drum and e-brake shoes is really small so it has to come straight off.

Hey etc I forgot the truck was in neutral when I dropped it off the jack on Tuesday. I really stinks when your freshly repaired explorer is heading for the highway (and the river on the other side) without you. Good thing I have a long (but steep) driveway.

That is why it is always recommended that you use a set of wheel chocks or blocks set on the diagonally opposite wheel from the one you are working on. Even a 2X4 will work. I hope you did not get hurt. Have you ever watched people launching boats on a slippery boat ramp? Boat floats but the truck and trailer do not.
